Unit Content

Curriculum Objective

This course unit provides the elements needed to understand and read Biblical Hebrew.

Outcomes

1. Demonstrate an intermediate working knowledge of biblical Hebrew, including:

1. recognise and translate common Hebrew vocabulary;
2. analyse grammar and syntax of intermediate Hebrew sentences;
3. recognize and translate participles, volititional verbs, infinitives;
4. reproduce and translate verbs in Niphal, Piel, Pual, Hiphil, Hophal, Hithpael verbal stems;
5. identify and parse verbs in all stems, including commonly occurring weak roots.

2. Demonstrate an intermediate understanding of the syntax of biblical Hebrew evidenced in the ability to exegete more demanding texts;
3. Use lexical and analytical aids to study the Hebrew Old Testament

1. Introduction to textual criticism of the Masoretic Text
2. Circumstantial clauses; particles and prepositions
3. The verbal system, aspect and tense
4. Narrative syntax
5. Hebrew poetry; style and dialects in Archaic Biblical Hebrew (ABH) and Late Biblical Hebrew (LBH)
