Outcomes

  1. Establish the context for alcohol and drug addiction work
  2. Identify appropriate community resource and/or facilities and professionals that you could work with or refer to as a professional counsellor
  3. Apply understanding of context of addiction to practice
  4. Integrate the core values and principles of work with additions into practice
  5. Apply understanding of the impact of values in working with addictions practice

Subject Content

  1. Different perspectives on addiction/s
  2. Types of addictions including: alcohol, drugs, gambling, shopping, love/sex
  3. Outlining the components of a holistic approach with clients and those affected by addictions
  4. Developmental perspectives of substance abuse & addictions
  5. Assessment, evaluation and referral processes
  6. Treatment of addictions
  7. Ethical issues in counselling addictions
  8. Preventive interventions

This course may be offered in the following formats

  • Intensives + E-learning (online) as follows: 1 x one day Intensives = 6 hours + approx 114 hours additional online lectures, time for research, writing, ancillary activities associated with completion of assigned tasks.

Note: The one -day Intensive is required to complete this unit.
