In this core unit students develop a theoplogical understanding of major chaplaincy related issues. Students explore the contexts and common pastoral care issues faced by Chaplains, and the role of the Chaplain / Pastoral Carer. Topics discussed range from the cycle of programming, implementing, evaluating, and reflecting in Chaplaincy to reporting, accountability and self care.

Unit Content

Outcomes

1. Develop a theological understanding of major chaplaincy related issues;
2. Prepare for pastoral and spiritual care work;
3. Establish an interpersonal relationship with the client requiring care and identify the range of issues impacting on that individual;
4. Analyse information to determine course of action.

1. Foundations of chaplaincy and pastoral care
2. Theological framework for chaplaincy
3. Communicating the gospel in a secular setting (awareness that this is not permitted in many workplaces)
4. The cycle of programming, implementing, evaluating and reflecting in Chaplaincy
5. Reporting to others and accountability as a chaplain or pastoral carer
6. Importance of self-care
7. The role of a Chaplain/Pastoral Carer in a variety of current Australian contexts
8. Common Chaplaincy/Pastoral Care issues

This course may be offered in the following formats

• Intensives + E-learning (online) as follows: 2 x three day Intensives  = 36 hours + approx 84 hours additional online lectures, time for research, writing, ancillary activities associated with completion of assigned tasks.

Note: Intensives 3 and 4 are required to complete this unit.
