Abstract

While some research is available on the origin and the global spread of Pentecostalism in Europe and Africa, there is a lack of research regarding a comparative investigation between Pentecostalism in Europe and Africa, particularly regarding miracles, signs, and wonders. Although healing miracles continue to play a significant role in global Pentecostalism, scholarly writings still need to be expanded on this critical subject. This thesis seeks to fill this gap through a comparative study of human perspectives and attitudes towards miracles in Scandinavia and Nigeria. Scandinavia has a population of around 25 million compared to Nigeria with over 230 million people.

The primary research question for this thesis is, “What are the perspectives and attitudes towards miracles among Pentecostals in Scandinavia and Nigeria?” This study argues that Christians’ perspectives and attitudes toward miracles significantly influence both the performance and experience of miracles and play a vital role in shaping World Pentecostalism.

The research employs a qualitative method approach which utilises natural and human data collection techniques, specifically interviews. The exploratory nature of the qualitative method will enable the investigation of nuances related to the research question. The qualitative approach will provide a deeper understanding of the perspectives and attitudes towards miracles through semi-structured interviews with 30 participants. The 30 participants will include 10 from Nigeria, 10 from the African diaspora in Scandinavia, and 10 from Scandinavia without any connections to Africa. The participants should be a fair representation of Pentecostal Pastors, leaders, and other Christian members.

The data analyses should uncover key factors that enhance the performance or experience of miracles in these two continents. Ultimately, the findings aim to inform and enrich my personal ministry practices within The Redeemed Christian Church of God, enhance Pentecostals’ outreach strategies, and provide practical insights to ministry leaders on effectively addressing the spiritual and pastoral needs of their congregations.
